Immigration and Customs Enforcement Will Raid Your Party

Saturday night, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Dallas P.D. and ICE (among other agencies) raided 26 Latino bars, night clubs, and pool halls looking to arrest undocumented security guards.

Authorities recovered four pistols. Federal law prohibits illegal immigrants from possessing firearms. Four of those arrested were from El Salvador, and the others were Mexican, authorities said.

One of the Salvadorans was in the U.S. legally, immigration officials said. It's unclear what charges he faces.

"Hopefully, this operation will help us send a message that we will not tolerate the falsification of documents for undocumented aliens under the guise of providing security," said Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins in a statement Sunday. (DMN)
As Marisa points out, the Dallas County D.A. is broadcasting another message.

the crackdown by ICE at such public places sends a message to the undocumented immigrant community that no place is safe. Yet, the same message is being received by immigrants who are also legally in the United States and know that in the government's haste to apprehend anyone who "appears" to be undocumented, everyone is presumed undocumented until proven otherwise.

Marisa had it completely right.

I am sick of hearing about crap like this (I myself and half-Mexican. My father came here legally when he was in his late teens). Racial profiling can never be justified, in my opinion. Sorry ICE.

The other day, my sister and I were in Barnes and Noble and we saw this book called HisPANIC: Why Americans Fear Hispanics in the U.S. (The only reason I remember the title is because I was so...disgusted...that this problem was so prevalent as to warrant a whole book on the subject, that I took a picture of it on my phone).

Back in high school, which was a very homogeneous environment, I'm afraid, I found myself defending Hispanics who were way too often generalized in false, unsavory manners. And then I got accused of having family who were illegals, because, why else would I care about Hispanics in America, right?

Agh. This is just gross. I can hear the conversation.

"Man, we haven't looked like complete xenophobes for a few hours. Let's go round up anyone who even dares LOOK like a Latino!"

I repeat. Gross.

I totally agree with your sentiments. It's out of control. It's brown people serving as a scapegoat for an economic situation they did not create.
